On July 21, 2016, alongside the 21st International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa, the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Health in Agenda 2030 and Ventures Africa, will debut Treatment For All: Our Lives, Our Stories, a documentary film that captures the deeply personal narratives of three African protagonists as they explore the impact of HIV on their lives and detail the wider ecosystem that supports access to treatment.
Thirty-five years ago, this Sunday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published a report describing cases of a rare lung infection, Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, in five young, previously healthy, gay men in Los Angeles. One year later, the CDC used the term “AIDS” to describe this condition for the first time. The world – and many of us who were there – would never be the same.
