On September 24, USAID’s Healthy Markets activity teamed up with Life Centre (an NGO) and Lighthouse (a social enterprise) to promote HIV products and services at VietPride, Vietnam’s national LGBT+ festival. In Hanoi, the Lighthouse team counseled more than 300 gay men on safer sex, condom use, HIV testing and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Thirty-six of them opted for HIV lay or self-testing (including one person with a reactive result indicating they are HIV+) and 18 people made appointments for testing at a later date. In Ho Chi Minh City, Life Centre highlighted HIV services and information about these services in Vietnam. U.S. Ambassador Ted Osius and U.S. Consul General Mary Tarnowka visited the booth at the Viet Pride event in Ho Chi Minh City to learn more about Healthy Market’s latest efforts. So what? VietPride is the largest public event promoting equal rights and inclusion for LGBT+ people in Vietnam. It is an ideal opportunity for local organizations to reach a wider audience of gay men and transgender women who are at a higher risk of contracting HIV, and provide them with information and access to essential products and services.
