USAID/Tanzania’s gender equality and youth inclusion project, or Tumaini (“Hope” in Kiswahili), serves the critical unifying role of integrating gender equality, women’s empowerment, and youth inclusion across a broad range of USAID activities. USAID’s activities in these areas focus on strengthening the national-level enabling environment for women and youth, increasing the promotion of women’s equality and youth inclusion at the local government and community levels, and ensuring that Tanzanian women and youth are healthier, better educated, and more productive.
The Government of Tanzania has made a commitment, both to its people and to the international community, to improve democratic governance. While Tanzania has a number of government accountability structures, their use by citizens to ensure greater transparency and accountability has been limited. Public resource oversight by citizens remains a gap in the fight against corruption and improved service delivery. Along with government oversight, performance gaps were also highlighted during the 2015 general elections.
USAID partners with Tanzanians to improve biodiversity conservation by building sustainable livelihoods and supporting natural resource management. This strategy involves developing and implementing key national environmental policies while supporting community-based conservation.
USAID programs in Tanzania are consistent with U.S. foreign policy and the Government of Tanzania’s national development goals. By empowering Tanzanian women and youth, achieving inclusive, broad-based, and sustainable economic growth, and improving effective democratic governance, these programs aim to advance Tanzania’s socioeconomic transformation toward middle-income status by 2025.
