The U.S. Embassy in Suva announced the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will provide $500,000 USD ($950,000 FJD) to support Fiji’s transition to a democratic and inclusive political system and its upcoming elections.

U.S. Ambassador Frankie A. Reed said “This demonstrates the U.S. Government’s commitment to the restoration of democracy in Fiji and its policy of expanded engagement with the Pacific region.”

USAID Mission Director, Gloria D. Steele said, “Over the last three decades, USAID has assisted emerging democracies in conducting free and fair elections. We believe that credible elections will foster improved governance and societal well-being that will help sustain Fiji’s growth.” USAID will coordinate this assistance with the Government of Fiji and other donors.

In 2012, USAID provided $800,000 USD ($1,500,000 FJD) to support the development of Fiji’s new constitution and currently supports programs that help communities in Fiji adapt to the negative impacts of global climate change and environmental degradation.
