PARTNERS: Chemonics International
USAID/Afghanistan provides $1.4 million per year in funding through a buy-in to this Washington-based and managed project. FEWS-NET/Afghanistan staff is based in the offices at the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock (MAIL). FEWS-NET is funded by USAID and works in cooperation with three other U.S. government agencies, NASA, USGS, USDA, and the prime contractor, Chemonics, to provide critical data to monitor rising or waning food insecurity situations specific to Afghanistan. Food security (markets, food prices, harvests, etc.), climate and weather information data as well as information about the significant movement of populations are updated regularly. From this, weekly and monthly reports are produced to inform donors and the relevant ministries in Afghanistan. The FEWS-NET project has been instrumental in identifying vulnerable populations and providing critical information to mitigate the negative effects of possible food crises.
